Drew Horsfall, Untitled.
Mixed media on MDF and pine, 3 components: 150 x 240 cm. Photo by the artist.

Drew Horsfall from VCA had a big work called Untitled and we have to confess when we saw it at the opening we thought it was rubbish. But we went back several times and looked at it again and eventually we began to love its rough-as-guts aesthetic. Horsfall’s work is a collage of images of Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Christina Aguleria, the alien from Alien, He Man dolls and crudely executed drawings of the artist playing arcade games, arranged on MDF and pine with some bits raised from the surface, others just stuck on and dog eared. There’s a certain knowingness to being crappy that can undermine the effect just as surely trying to be perfect and failing underscores an artist’s inexperience, but Horsfall caries it off somehow and after sustained viewing Untitled is little bit like drinking too much spumante, all heady and queasy. It’s cheap, but it gets the job done.
