Artspace Visual Arts Centre is seeking to fill the position of Executive Director from 1 January 2006.

In 1982, Artspace was established in Sydney as an artist driven initiative. Artspace has evolved into a unique centre for the development, research and exhibition of significant new critical initiatives in contemporary art and theory in Australia and internationally.

Through the support of the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy of the Australia Council and the NSW Ministry for the Arts, Artspace has received a significant increase in its operating budget. The Executive Director will play the key role in the further development and leadership of Artspace’s exceptional contribution to contemporary art in relation to this new funding environment.

The Executive Director has overall responsibility for the strategic development, management and programming of Artspace Visual Arts Centre. The role of the Executive Director is to implement Board policies whilst ensuring the efficient utilisation of all company resources. The Executive Director is an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors, the governing body of Artspace and would be expected to work in a collegiate manner with the Board in achieving the goals of the organisation.

The successful applicant will hold a higher degree in visual arts, related discipline or equivalent; have a demonstrated capacity for leadership in the field and financial management, excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. They will also have a demonstrated commitment and understanding of contemporary Australian art, culture and society within a national and international context.

A competitive salary package will be negotiated with the successful applicant.
