“I was recently in the show DEATH at Casula Powerhouse, it got amazing feedback, death is so hot right now. I’m not only an artist dealing with death and dying though, I’ve also become a bit of a death literacy advocate. I’m doing my Masters by Research at CDU (‘Remnants of the dead and demands on the living’), and through my research into all things death, I’ve branched out into all kinds of arms of the topic. I’m also a Research Assistant at UWS on a ‘Caring at end of life’ project. I had a 6:36 video work 1 million years (set in a Blue Mountains grotto, my daughter is shrouding me in sarongs from Darwin where we used to live) and a set of sculptures Holding Space (deconstructed silk scarves and jewellery of my mothers). This work and more will be exhibited at ANCA in Canberra (my Masters show) and the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre in 2016. I’m running a Death Cafe in Katoomba on August 8 for Dying to Know Day.” – Hayley West.
