“Through the expressive potential of remote landscapes, Shoufay Derz explores the thresholds between experience and representation. Negatives direct the viewer towards a sense of absence not immediately apparent. Derz considers the unknown as inextricable from the known world, an intimate experience beyond explanation. Derz is drawn to landscapes that evoke a sense of otherness and the familiar. She is compelled by how a visual artist uses the visible to depict the invisible.Derz is a Sydney based artist working across a range of media including medium format photography, video and installation. Her work approaches what lies beyond the known, examining how absence is articulated through marks of presence. This new work was developed after travelling through the remote areas of the Taklamakan desert, China and the isolated volcanic landscape of Ambrym, Vanuatu. Seven images from the new series will be on exhibition at the Queensland Centre of Photography until 13 January 2013.” – Shoufay Derz.

Exhibition details: Shoufay Derz – Negatives. Opening Saturday 1 December, 5-8pm at the Queensland Centre for Photography (QCP) Corner of Cordelia and Russell Streets, South Brisbane, Australia.
