P25 Phil Williams- Amour Animate Apocalypto
Amour Animate Apocalypto presents Phil Williams’ distinctive psychedelic palette, alongside more quietly beautiful works inspired by the iconic (late) musician Kurt Cobain. In his practice, Phil Williams aims to explore the ephemeral nature of the painted surface—at once tactile and illusory, physical and meditative—conflicting forces at play, for both artist and viewer: “My paintings come from joy, love, confusion, ecstasy. A shifting equilibrium, animation in stillness; an optical illusion where the mirage is tactile.” A fleeting, yet profound, experience takes shape in the pictorial space. Art simultaneously removes us from direct experience through an abstraction of reality—but it is precisely this distancing of our interaction with the world that enables us to reach further into it’s extremities. Williams’ paints us a landscape of exotic pop, yet this fantasia is also fraught with sadness and fragility, expressed by the figure of Kurt Cobain, as in the case of his work “On a Plain”, a reference to Pop’s simple idealised power and its transient lifespan.
P19 Bronia Iwanczak – Rice/Ice/Horse/Water
Rice / Ice / Water / Horse continues Bronia Iwanczak’s exploration of the artists book medium. In this quartet of books and photographs, Iwanczak makes an enquiry into the acquisition of language. She examines the act of “naming” and its relationship to embodiment, exploring the experience of “being” in the world, as defined by the coordinates of language with which we create conscious meaning. This act transforms in part what the artist has termed the “landing”.
