Chalk Horse is very pleased to be presenting The Nothing, on its Sydney leg. It has already had a very successful run at West Space, Melbourne, where the curator Kelly Fliedner, is program co-ordinator. West Space, established in 1993, is one of the most respected Artist Run Initiatives in the country and we are
excited to be able to collaborate with them in this way.
It is a great pleasure to host these excellent Melbourne artists and we hope that it leads to more border crossings! We acknowledge the help of the Australia Council in this venture, who have also suggested that a better dialogue between the states and ARIs in general will foster a vibrant and dynamic community; we totally agree.
The exhibition features work by: Damiano Bertoli, Lou Hubbard, Sanné Mestrom, Deborah Ostrow, Daniel Price, Matthew Shannon & Jackson Slattery.
The Nothing explores realms of the unknown and potentially unknowable aspects of human understanding – the things that we can’t fully comprehend or for which words and recognisable forms simply do not exist. The exhibition’s title, The Nothing, is taken from the childhood fable The Neverending Story, wherein an indescribable ‘emptiness’ pervades Fantascia (the mythical land in which the story takes place),chronicling the ‘gap’ between islands of human knowledge and understanding. As such, the proposed exhibition, The Nothing addresses liminal spaces, transposing and transforming materials from the familiar to the foreign in order to explore themes of uncertainty and crisis.
