The hugely influential American photographer Gregory Crewdson is visiting Sydney this month and he’ll be giving two lectures – one at Sydney University presented by the Power Institute, and the second at the University of Technology.

On Friday April 15 Crewdson will present Uncanny Landscapes: An artist talk with American photographer Gregory Crewdson:

“American photographer Gregory Crewdson has made a distinctive contribution to the aesthetics of photography with his ambitious and beautifully crafted work whose aesthetic owes as much to history painting and cinema as it does to contemporary photography. His disturbingly beautiful, large-scale, small-town American landscape narratives created a distinctive and perplexing world; his latest work deploys the melancholy strangeness of Cinecitta’s ruins to create a different kind of photographic uncanny. He will talk about the full scope of his work in this artist talk.”

Date: Friday 15 April, 2011, Time: 6.00pm to 7.30pm, Venue: Law School Auditorium 101 venue information, the University of Sydney Cost: Free event, no booking or registration required. Check the website for more info.

The second lecture is on April 18 at UTS:

“One of the most important and influential contemporary photographic artists worldwide, Gregory Crewdson, will speak at UTS’s Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building on Monday 18 April as part of the Photography and Situated Media Image Studies Lecture Series. Best known for his disquieting images of suburban life that often take weeks to produce, Crewdson works within a photographic tradition that combines the documentary style of William Eggleston and Walker Evans with the dream-like vision of filmmakers such as Stephen Spielberg and David Lynch. Crewdson’s method is equally cinematic, building elaborate sets to take pictures of extraordinary detail and narrative portent. In this special event he will discuss his current work and will engage the audience in an intimate question and answer session. David Burns, Director of the Bachelor of Design in Photography and Situated Media, says “We are thrilled to host Gregory Crewdson in the PSM Image Studies Lecture Series and to provide the students with a rare opportunity to interact with Mr. Crewdson. This event embodies our goal of creating unique engagements with leading figures in photography from Australia and abroad.”

When: 18 April 2011 – 6:30pm – 8:00pm Where: University of Technology, Sydney, Building 6 (Peter Johnson Building), level 7, 702-730 Harris Street, Ultimo. Info at UTS Newsroom
