Taking its name from both the rapidly flickering light of cinematic imagery and the ultra violet light of the sun (and its consequent physicality on objects and bodies), VIOLENT LIGHT continues my use of sunlight to make images on paper. The sun-bleaching process involves painting a picture onto polyester film, which is then laid over paper and exposed to sunlight for a period of up to a month. The resulting image is a ‘ghost’ of the painting, a shadow-like silhouette, but varying in tonality across the image. The technique’s images are like the optical effects of after-imagery, and the TV damage effect known as screen-burn.

In place of the cinema’s screen is a large sheet of cardboard upon which a projection is cast. This projection is ‘sunbleached’ onto the cardboard, and it is the interplay between the film imagery and the surface of the screen that forms the basis of the work. Screenings are approximately 5 minutes and run in cycle from 6-9pm.
