For her installation ‘That’s not how it appeared on the box…’ Tsering Frykman-Glen will build a small and short-lived utopia based on nostalgic references and childhood fantasies.
“When I was little I remember asking when? when? when? and being told when you grow up! Well, I’ve grown up and I still can’t ride a motorbike around a burning pit of fire or build a real live-inable house out of Lego or talk to horses or hold hands on a hillside with a band of multi-ethnic peace loving multiculturists, stopping wars by singing songs and drinking a well known brand of soft drink. Those strange utopias I built in my head will never exist and were just a way for my parents to get me to shut up, with the promise of better things to come.”
By building a giant diorama that incorporates a flat pack landscape, nostalgic sounds, fairy floss and a time lapse video of a growing Magic Garden, Frykman-Glen is aware that, like most extravagant plans, perfection maybe impossible but she’s trying and she’s sincere. And perhaps the imperfections are all part of the experience, a final recognition that utopian dreams are just dreams and that life itself is imperfect, but that it’s still important to keep dreaming.
