Friday Mar 7 13:08 AEDT

Sydney artist Del Kathryn Barton has won the Archibald Prize with a portrait she says celebrates the love she has for her two children.

The 35-year-old artist won the $50,000 first prize in Australia’s most famous art award for a self portrait with her five-year-old son Kell and two-year-old daughter Arella.

Del Kathryn Barton,
You are what is most beautiful about me, a self portrait with Kell and Arella,
2007.

The work is entitled You Are What Is Most Beautiful About Me.

Posing with her children at the NSW Art Gallery on Friday, Ms Barton said “both my children have taken my world by storm”.

“Very little compares to the devotion I feel for both of them.

“The intensity of this emotion is not something I could have prepared myself for.”

Her portrait was selected by the Archibald judges ahead of a portrait of the late actor Heath Ledger.
