Shona Wilson’s quest to highlight the importance of small things has led her to create this latest exhibition of exquisite assemblages. Wilson works with a plethora of tiny elements or ‘found objects’ from the natural world that might include miniscule twigs, fish scales, bird feathers or butterfly wings. Combining these with plastic materials, Wilson’s synthetic sculptures are both metaphor and real-life representations of disquieting phenomena. In an exhibition that abounds with reinvented land/sea creatures the artist also introduces a lace-like wreath entitled Heirloom and series of delicate ‘plastic spirits’ identified by their coined Latin titles. Wilson’s art both enlightens and evangelises about the artist’s passion for the natural environment. Despite her abiding concern for the future, the artist also assures us that by working with such small elements she’s discovered more about nature’s strength and “imaginative resilience” than its frailty.
With a steady underground following veteran painter, Chick Gordon, now in her eighties, is having her first show with King Street Gallery. Gordon, a trained nurse, has over many years stepped in and out of her art practice. A series of colourful still life and landscape paintings demonstrate a fresh approach to the canvas and a talent for formal arrangement while being immersed in the language of post-impressionism.
