Coming Off A Sugar High

Art Life , Op-ed May 18, 2004 No Comments

We’ve been riding on an absurd high the last few weeks and we knew that a crash had to come. You get a little bit of sugar, and you want more and more until eventually you start to black out. And the art world is just the same. We’ve been seeing a lot of art and liking most of it – sure, we’ve had a few issues but that’s normal – and we became complacent. It has been a tough week when the only real high point is a framed, black and white photo we saw of Johnny O’Keefe sitting in a backyard somewhere with Ricky May, sharing a private joke, Johnny, a bit disturbed, glancing away from Ricky who looks like a big bear lookin’ for love, lookin’ for a hug.
