“This exhibition explores the significance of the historical China Cabinet figurine in contemporary Western culture. Contemporary figurines can act as a tool for exploring the implications of international exchange as well as the forms and images made possible by changes in information technology, material science and industrial techniques. In a contemporary context, the Syndrome can serve as a metaphor for exploring the unfettered interaction of notions of beauty and preciousness in a digital age which mutates aesthetic ideals at a prodigious rate. The project will speculate on the possible relationship between Astro Boy and Dresden figurines; the significance of Copeland blue and white patterns in relation to soft porn imagery and will question whether the Psycho Killer Clown really murdered Beatrix Potter’s Bunnykins.” – Michael Keighery
The China Syndrome, Wilson St Gallery, Newtown, until Sunday 17 August.
