“2013 was my final year at The National Art School. I was trained to paint on canvas or board. I finished my degree painting inside multiple kitchen sinks that I found from Reverse Garbage or the streets in Darlinghurst. Canvas never quite had the same appeal after the first sink. If I’m not painting on found objects, I’m painting on strong board panels that allow me to fix objects to the surface of the painting. Having a solid surface and 3D wall hanging as a platform to paint on is what its all about for me. My works deal with my own idea of a finished painting. To the viewer, the paintings seem resolved and finished when the paint has stopped being applied. However, even though they look resolved, to me they are only half finished at this point. I need to then subject the painting to an additional process by adding something to the surface or subtracting parts I don’t like. I use banal or found objects and attach them on the surface of the self- made construction or board painting to enhance the viewing experience. While some of my paintings actively invite the viewer to touch them, the viewer is unsure whether it is appropriate to do so. The works often differ in terms of style and subject matter as each object inspires me to create a new image based off the shape, size etc.. The process of creating the work bit by bit is as important as the subject matter that is placed onto the work itself” Myles Young.
